Waste Sorting at the Source
Source separation: a cornerstone of performance for the commercial packaging industry
Sorting commercial packaging at the source is one of the key factors in the success of this new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program.
It is based on a clear principle: sorting packaging waste by material to ensure it is properly processed.
For certain facilities, when the volume of waste to be recycled or the space available for implementing more advanced sorting poses a constraint, it will still be possible to mix packaging intended for recycling, in accordance with the collection standards defined by the eco-organization.
In warehouses, workshops, logistics facilities, and food service establishments, sorting at the source is essential to ensure that packaging waste is reused and recycled.
This approach helps prevent materials from being mixed with non-recyclable waste, improves the quality of the collected materials, and reduces management costs throughout the entire process.
An obligation and an opportunity
Since the AGEC Act was enacted, all businesses are required to sort paper, metal, plastic, glass, and wood waste—as well as biowaste—at the source.
For commercial packaging, these requirements entail the following obligations:
The goal is twofold: to meet the recycling rates set by the government and to make source separation a part of professionals’ daily routines.
Léko Pro's Role in Implementing Recycling
Léko Pro helps businesses of all sizes implement waste sorting at the source.
Our efforts are organized around three main areas:
- Operational support: diagnostic tools, internal supply chain models, local collection solutions;
- Technical support: advice on layout, signage, and the appropriate containers for each type of material;
- Training and awareness-raising: through the Léko Academy, workshops, and sector-specific feedback sessions.
The industry is modernizing: the use of digital solutions, sensors, and automated monitoring and reporting platforms. Léko Pro is part of this trend, helping its members transition to a connected and transparent management system for their end-of-life packaging.
